What Royal Jelly Actually Is

Royal jelly is a milky-white secretion produced by the hypopharyngeal and mandibular glands of young nurse bees, typically between five and fifteen days old. It is not honey, it is not pollen, and it is not a plant product at all. It is a glandular secretion — closer, biologically speaking, to mammalian milk than to anything else in the hive.

Every larva in a colony is fed royal jelly for the first three days of life. After that, worker and drone larvae are switched to a mixture of honey and pollen. Only the larva selected to become a queen continues on royal jelly exclusively, and is fed it in enormous quantity for her entire life.

The consequence of that dietary difference is the single most striking fact in apiculture. A queen bee and a worker bee begin as genetically identical female larvae. What Is In It

Fresh royal jelly is roughly:

  • 50–60% water
  • Around 18% protein — dominated by a family called the Major Royal Jelly Proteins (MRJPs), which account for the large majority of its total protein content
  • Around 15% carbohydrates — mostly fructose and glucose
  • 3–6% lipids — and this fraction is the unusual one
  • Trace minerals, B vitamins (notably pantothenic acid), and free amino acids

10-HDA: The Compound Found Nowhere Else

The most distinctive component of royal jelly is 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid, universally shortened to 10-HDA. It is a medium-chain fatty acid that occurs in no other known natural substance. It makes up roughly 2–3% of fresh royal jelly, and because it is unique, the international trade uses 10-HDA concentration as the standard marker of royal jelly authenticity and freshness. A product claiming to be royal jelly with negligible 10-HDA is either degraded or adulterated.

If you are buying royal jelly, the 10-HDA percentage is the single most useful number on the label — considerably more informative than the milligram dose.

A Note on "Royalactin"

In 2011, a paper in Nature by Masaki Kamakura identified a specific protein, which he named royalactin, as the factor responsible for triggering queen development. It was a widely publicised result and it is still repeated as settled fact across the supplement industry.

It is not settled. Subsequent work has challenged the royalactin hypothesis, and the current scientific consensus is that queen determination is more complex than a single protein — likely involving nutritional quantity, sugar content, pH, and multiple epigenetic mechanisms acting together. We mention this because a brand that tells you the science is finished is not being straight with you.

The Human Benefits: Sorting Evidence From Enthusiasm

Here is the fair summary: royal jelly has a genuinely interesting biochemical profile, a substantial body of laboratory and animal research, and a much thinner body of good human clinical evidence. Most human trials have been small, short, and conducted in a handful of countries. That does not mean the effects are absent. It means the confidence intervals are wide.

1. Skin and Collagen Support

This has some of the more consistent supporting work. Royal jelly has been studied for its effects on collagen production and skin hydration, with several small trials and a reasonable mechanistic rationale via its protein and fatty acid fractions. It is also one of the most common traditional uses across cultures that harvest it.

2. Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Activity

10-HDA and the MRJPs both show antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory settings. Whether the doses achievable through oral supplementation reproduce those effects systemically in humans is less certain — a recurring caveat with bee products generally.

3. Menopausal Symptom Support

A small number of randomised trials have examined royal jelly for menopausal symptoms, with some reporting modest improvements in quality-of-life scores. The trials are small and the effect sizes are moderate, but this is one of the better-studied human applications.

4. Energy and General Vitality

This is the most commonly marketed benefit and the least well evidenced. It is largely traditional use plus the intuitive appeal of the queen bee story. We would not build a purchase decision on it.

Promising in vitro and animal work, limited human data. File under "plausible, unproven."

The Safety Conversation That Matters

Royal jelly is the bee product with the most significant allergy profile, and this deserves more prominence than it usually gets.

Do not take royal jelly if you have asthma or a history of severe allergic reactions without speaking to a doctor first. Documented cases of anaphylaxis following royal jelly ingestion exist in the medical literature, and people with asthma or atopy appear to be at elevated risk. Reactions have occurred in people with no prior history of bee product allergy.

Other cautions:

  1. Buy refrigerated or freeze-dried — a jar sitting on a warm shelf is a poor bet.
  2. Check for a stated 10-HDA percentage. Quality producers publish it. Around 1.6% or higher is a commonly used international benchmark for good fresh royal jelly.
  3. Prefer smaller, traceable producers. Royal jelly is labour-intensive to harvest and among the most commonly adulterated hive products.
  4. Be sceptical of very cheap product. Harvesting royal jelly requires grafting larvae into queen cells and collecting a few hundred milligrams per cell. The economics do not support bargain pricing.

Why Harvesting Practice Matters

Royal jelly harvesting is more demanding on a colony than honey harvesting. It requires manipulating the colony's queen-rearing behaviour repeatedly, and done carelessly it stresses the hive. Traditional practice is a small amount — commonly 100 to 500 mg of fresh royal jelly — taken in the morning, held under the tongue rather than swallowed immediately, on the theory that sublingual contact improves uptake of the protein fraction.
